Hegel und Droysen sind demgegenüber bereits der Auffassung, daß erst eine bestimmte Fragestellung, ein bestimmtes "erkenntnisleitendes Interesse", d.h. ein zunächst zu konstituierender allgemeiner Begriff in die Lage versetzt, die unübersehbare Fülle von Information bezüglich des vergangenen Geschehens sinnvoll zu strukturieren. Darüber hinaus ist die Geschichtswissenschaft auf die Analyse jener Bestimmungen angewiesen, welche das Verhältnis der Menschen zum Geschehen in der Zeit immer schon konstituieren. So finden sich bei Hegel und Droysen intensive Bemühungen um die Bestimmung der Begriffe 'Zeit', 'Erinnerung' und 'Gedächtnis', um die Bedeutung der Strukturen von Denken und Sprache für die Wissenschaft von der Geschichte sowie die fundamentale Frage nach dem Bewegungsmodell, das 'der Geschichte' zugrunde liegt.
